Brexit Is a Complete failure

In reality, Brexit has screwed up the hopes of many ordinary people with modest means who wanted to retire to the sun and end their days there. Now places like Spain, etc demand certain income/resources, medical insurance, etc, etc that ordinary people have no hope of complying with. They're stuck with ending their days in grim, damp, rip-off Blighty.

Ms Betts said that food and drink manufacturers were dealing with unprecedented cost pressures. "Those increases are rooted in the disruption caused by Covid-19, by the war in Ukraine, by the cost of Brexit when moving food stuffs across the border has become much more complicated and expensive."

From an article about Tesco investigating prices rises from suppliers

Funnily enough...

"Ministers have been accused of leaving a “record of failure and broken promises” as internal forecasts show Britain will be 15 years late in achieving its £1tn annual export target after being hit by Brexit.

Projections from the Department for International Trade (DIT) show the value of UK exports will not reach £1tn until 2035, based on current trends, with the total due to fall to £707bn next year.

The deferral underlines how difficult British ministers have found it to meet the lofty predictions Brexiters made about international trade after leaving the EU."

"The estimates are based on forecasts from the independent Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), which show exports falling from £739bn last year to £707bn next year, before rising again to £725bn by 2027"

The 'target' will be met far later than that of course, if at all...

Maybe brexiteers can point out the benefits?

After all, it only cost £8bn a year to have access to the world's biggest trading bloc, so surely the benefits of dumping that cushy little number should be showing by now?

Another report that should be of interest to the trades people on here...

"The cost of materials and labour for construction have increased more steeply in the UK than the EU since the Brexit referendum, new research has found.

Analysis of data from EU member states, the central EU database, Eurostat, and the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy show that between 2015 and 2022 the cost of construction materials including cement, timber and steel increased by 60%.

At the same time, the cost of labour in the UK went up by 30%.

In the EU, where similar pressures including supply chain and Covid problems applied, the cost of materials went up 35% while labour in countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands went up by just over 14%.

The UK Trade and Business Commission (UKTBC), an independent body of experts set up to track the impact of Brexit, said the research would deepen growing concerns over labour shortages in the UK.

D’Maris Coffman, the director of the Bartlett school of sustainable construction at University College London said Covid and the energy crisis had also driven up costs. “On balance, I would agree that Covid is the least of the three, probably a fifth all told, and that Brexit and the energy crisis are probably about two-fifths each, about 40% each,” she said.

Hilary Benn, a Labour MP and former chair of the House of Commons Brexit committee, said it was “clear that Brexit and its subsequent trade deals have created many more problems for UK businesses than opportunities”.

Last week a thinktank estimated Brexit had led to a shortfall of 330,000 in the UK labour force, mostly in the low-skilled sectors."

By definition there should be plenty of low skilled brexiteers who could fill those gaps...

Except many of them are brown bread by now!

FYI, I am in the process of completing a Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages / Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TESOL/TEFL) course.
This will allow me to apply for jobs in countries where they either employ teachers in schools for that purpose, or allow me to teach in a private capacity, in groups, individually or online.
I'm halfway through the online course so far, and it's taken me about a couple of weeks. There are testimonials from others who have completed the course in just two weeks.
There are already numerous existing adverts for current vacancies. A simple internet search will throw up many adverts and opportunities.
Some countries will require you to have a sponsorship letter from your potential employer for your visa application.
No knowledge of the native language of your chosen destination country is required. But of course, it would add immensely to your CV.

It isn't what I really want to do, I'm now retired and I want to move to a South East Asian country. It's a process through which I can attain a long term visa to move to another country, and arrive with a job waiting for me.
If you want the details of the course, I'm happy to provide it. I won't initially as it would probably be considered as spam.
There are numerous providers of such courses. Some of the more expensive ones guarantee a job interview at the end.
There are also numerous online providers of teaching aids.
I'm happy for you to message me, if you want.

Good luck with that. My Texan friend teaches English in Prague. He's been doing it years and seems to get on well with it. How he does it, I don't know as he doesn't speak Czech. Then again, as a Yank, he doesn't even speak English. :giggle:

In other words a remainer charged with being gamekeeper. It's no wonder Brexit never had any chance of getting off the ground when the political establishment never wanted to take it on, Johnstone included.

The Jackanories knew how to fool the public into voting for Brexit against their own interests. As for what to do after Brexit - they don't have the foggiest.

The remainers left no stone unturned to put the fear of god into the electorate to vote remain, they even wheeled out Obama in their efforts.
Anyways if being part of a United States of Europe is your bag and westminster a place for rubbing stamping orders then that's your perogative.
Once they've got everyone trapped inside offering them fools gold, that's when we get to see the true face of the EU, suckers.
