Just bought travel insurance. I had a discount code but when I put it in, it didn't give 15% off.

So I rang the company.

Oh yeah, she said, it only gives 15% off the quote part, not the medical screening aspect.

So, on a quote of £810, my 15% discount got me £73 off.

As I told the girl on the phone, it sounds very misleading.

I would expect it to be 15% off the total quote.

The ASA are pretty good at clamping down on dodgy practices.

What is it with you and discounts!
I knew this story sounded familiar! :D

If it's the best deal then buy it. If not then buy somewhere else.

No need for any campaigning or pointless principles.

Perhaps find a worthy cause where you could genuinely make a real difference?

Wifes cousin pays over £2K for yearly insurance, that's balanced against almost free flights (BA pensioner)

Some people are numerically challenged. They may, incorrectly, believe that they are getting the best deal.

Consumer laws exist to protect us from firms that are less than honest.

Do little old dears that get ripped off by cold callers on their doorstep deserve no sympathy because they didn't shop around?

I was surprised that the discount wasn't 15% on the whole amount. Now, looking back at the offer which was sent by email, it explained it would only be 15% excluding medical screening. Now, you could say that's being "ill"ist, but I'll let it go.

I don't know whether the woman on the phone would have mentioned it if I hadn't brought it up first.

Is the medical screening simply them asking you tell them which ailments you have? And did they mention that all people need to go through medical screening?

They ask you to declare if you have any conditions. If you do, you start typing and select from the list. Then you answer the questions they ask.

As far as I know, you only go through screening if you declare any conditions.
