But unless their "home" country accepts that they are their citizens they are not going to accept them or let us into their airspace. I think the main problem with the small boat type of illegal immigrants is that even after they have been through the process we often can't prove which country they come from so we can't return them. I can't see what changes to the system would solve that. The vast majority of people who are here illegally are actually those who have overstayed their visas. We seem to have a pretty relaxed attitude to those types and nobody ever seems to talk about them.

What I don't understand is if they can't prove what country they come from, how can they claim asylum? They give some BS sob story that they were being opressed in their country - but what country? How can their story stand up?

If someone claimed to come from, for example, Iran - give me an interpreter and internet and I could ask them 10 questions and know instantly if they were lying about which country. Not rocket science.
