Building a fake chimney breast around wood burner

Hi,

Photo of my living room attached. I am looking for advice when it comes to creating a fake chimney breast... where would i buy the steel to create the 'chimney' i know we would also need fire proof boards.

Online i am seeing people making chimney breasts out of wood, but we can't do that because we have a wood burner and it gets very hot.

When we have the chimney breast done, our plan is the add cabinets either side of the fire place, with floating shelves above.

Then are looking to get a smaller tv and have it on one of the side cabinets so it can more at eye level (before anyone says how high the tv is haha).

I would say the TV is too small.

There is a minimum gap between wood burner and combustible material, something like 450mm from memory. So if space permits you could create a wooden structure, maybe even diy it.

Depends on the wood burner model. Mine is 100mm iirc. To your point though its worth leaving space to accommodate a different stove in future.

You can make the frame from timber and line it where necessary adjacent to the burner, with cement board which can then be plastered or boarded over and skimmed. Intumescent sealant to joints.

Thanks just checked, mine is 150mm sides and 300mm rear. So I think timber frame would be ok with fire proof boards! X

The only thing to account for now, I think is getting a new hearth. We want to bring the wood burner forward and that won’t leave much space at the front if we do that, don’t want the wood burner buried at the back of the chimney breast. The recess that is currently cut out of the largest it can be too!

Ours might look similar to this, with frontal recess at the back and a newly made one which is wider …

Cement board is fire proof yeah? Yeah the timber wouldn’t be that close to the burner itself! Would be a load cheaper too than getting steal or whatever!

Just go by the fire manufactures allowed clearances for around and infront of the fire when constructing the surround etc.

It looks great as it is, no need to waste space, time and money to make it look less elegant.

I'm planning to strip all my fireplace out and just have a flush opening and shelf - a lot like you already have!

but look how good this looks! And I’m mostly thinking about all the storage i would have with two cupboards either side hahaha
