Some of the points being made on the telly box by UK politicians and talking heads re Starmer increasing defence spending by cutting foreign aid have made me think 'What the feck are we doing?!?'

Last night, a politician said to this effect. The UK should continue with its current levels of foreign aid because if it doesn't, the tensions it helps to mitigate between warring countries will surely increase, leading to more people being displaced and x of them wanting to come here.

Another person (talking head) said the foreign aid needs to continue because these countries are so corrupt, if we don't continue, increasing numbers of their populations will suffer.

This got me thinking, eh? What?!?

So, we're essentially being held to ransom by these countries because they can't stop warring and/or their leaders are corrupt? So we, like mugs, keep pumping our tax pounds into them? And someone made a good point on a tv prog last night. If the countries are corrupt, how do we know the foreign aid money is even reaching those it's intended for? Maybe it's about time these countries got themselves sorted out instead of the west propping them up.

Trump has made the EU/UK wake up re defence spending. If some of these countries achieve this by cutting foreign aid budgets, maybe just maybe it'll have the knock-on consequence of making foreign aid recipient countries wake up and think 'sh1t, we need to get our act together!'

I doubt it of course ;)

I personally think charity is a personal choice. We should not pay mandatory charity via taxes.

Foreign Aid, is charity. I like donating to charity. I tend to choose those with a UK focus and of course I claim the tax benefit.
Investment is business.

Our overseas aid budget does seem to get spent on some crazy projects. All be it a very small amount.

Foreign aid is not a zero sum game

Calling it charity oversimplifies it.

So you think people with disabilities in the UK should not get govt benefits, they should beg on the streets.

A person that develops MS.....fuk em says Motorbiking, charity should be a personal choice.

Charity shouldn't replace basic services. Cutting foreign aid could well result in an increase in asylum seekers.

good grief, how on earth did you conclude that. I've said foreign aid is charity. key word : Foreign.

or are you just being a lying troll again?

That was a stand-alone paragraph, it did not mention the word “foreign”

Perhaps your command of the English grammar is poor and you don’t understand sentence and paragraph construction.

The U.K. is a key donor to Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey to help in the cost of housing 5.3m Syrian refugees
The money comes out of the foreign aid budget.

Please could you tell me what would happen to those refugees if Europe including U.K. stop providing aid.
Do you think there’s a teensy weensy chance some might pop over to U.K.?

I agree that we shouldn’t just give money to corrupt nations without checks and balances…..It would be interesting to learn more detail about what the process actually is

Yet you disagree with what DOGE is doing , make your mind up

And people still believe the bulk of foreign aid goes to those that actually need it and not lining peoples pockets
you sound like one of those Zionists who claim eveyone in UNWRA is on the make for Palestine.

This thread is about foreign aid. I have defined that as charity and stated that charity should be voluntary and not mandatory via taxes.

If you disagree that charity is a personal choice, then you are suggesting that all charities should be funded via tax. That seems rather unworkable.
