Its ironic that Ukraine is fighting to preserve borders that were created by the enemy they are fighting.
Can't see why they don't just redraw their borders and let go of the bits that don't want to stay in Ukraine.

witch bits should they keep?

None of the parts of Ukraine want to be part of the Russian Federation.

You need to stop reading from the Putin playbook

You are only siding with Russia because you hate the EU…….you are a narrow minded Unionist

Ukraine will not accede to those conditions.
No justice. No peace.
If Trump's prepared to allow those conditions to apply to any ceasefire deal then he's stabbing them in the back.
well the no Nato membership has already basically been agreed

That's not what I was getting at.

I was asking whether the very act of building massive militaries all round the world and possibly proliferating nuclear weapons might possibly create instability and lead to wars.

Will we end up longing for the days when the USA kept things mainly safe?

It's a very big question. I don't know the answer.
Russsia has demonstrated that it is not to be trusted, and has exploited the hollowing out of armed forces and military in the West since the end of the cold war. That is not a bad thing, but it takes two to tango. History goes in phases, we have had relative peace in the UK and Europe since the end of WW2, maybe now the time is moving towards war.

My gut feeling is that overall it can't be a good thing.
Maybe, maybe not. It might not be a bad thing if countries start to treat America like the bullies they have become. Trump is treating international relations like his dodgy real estate deals. Hopefully other countries can group together and tell him to do one.

My main problem with Trump over all this is the d!cking about. Just look at what he is doing with tariffs. On/Off/On/Off. Uncertainty is bad enough for business and trade. But it is many, many times worse when it comes to war and peace.

My main point was that if other countries realise that they can no longer trust the USA to act consistently, then they may decide they have no choice but to massively rearm. And if they decide that they can't rely on the USA's nuclear umbrella, then they might decide that they have no choice but to build their own nuclear weapons. I wasn't meaning that they would plan to use them against the USA. Just that if there is massive militarisation of the world and proliferation of nuclear weapons, there could be some extremely bad unintended consequences.

I understood the point you were making and I don't disagree. More countries being armed to higher levels can only make mistakes more likely.

He makes up policy on the hoof and to hell with the consequences. He didn't consider the effect on world markets and has had to pull back on tariffs, yet again. Are the Senate and HoR now totally sidelined? He just seems to be making decisions on everything by himself.

The separation of powers in the USA is often much vaguer than here, even though they have a written constitution. Trump can only do this when there is a national emergency. So, he has signed an executive order claiming that there is a national emergency with fentanyl being trafficked from Canada. Even though there is no such emergency. But it means that he now has the power to mess about with tariffs on Canada.

Steve Banon the so called architect of the alt right made an interesting point that there has been little or no push back on federal interference with state powers. Doubtless legal challenges are on their way
