I've never seen those. But I did ask a nice man in Morrisons, who was stacking the fridges, how they knew when they needed replenishing. And he showed me that there are a cameras on the fridges on the opposite side of the aisle. They send messages to his phone telling him which items are low. It was pretty cool seeing how it all worked. He showed how moving items around on the shelf triggered various messages and videos in real time of what needed doing.

Ocado is an interesting example in retail tech. They were an early - too early, adopter. Their warehouses were/are full of the latest robotics. Shares over 6 years went from £2 to £30, now they're back at £3. They're half owned by M&S, but are fit for a takeover perhaps. M&S share chart looks like the inverse of Ocado's. Every now and again there's a story and Ocado's stock moons.
I have an automatic fridge stock adjusting device. I eat stuff and it gets replaced.

Not here yet, I was in Lidl an hour ago.
I was in Lidl yesterday, I only wanted olive oil.
After picking up the bottle, I went straight to the checkout with the shortest queue. Just as I got there, the guy closed it. So I went to the self service checkouts, there are six. I wanted to pay cash, but they all seemed to be card only. I told the operative that I wanted to pay cash, and I was directed to the checkouts with the big queues.
"Would you mind putting this back on the shelf" I said as I handed him the olive oil.

No self-service here, just seven tills. I only went there to get some more scones, well why not - there was still some wiped cream left over, from the last lot of scones. Two tills with long queus, a third had just opened, so I made a dash for that one. Just one person, with three items ahead of me.

Apparently Lidl are putting these electronic shelf labels in all stores so should come to yours soon.
I can see the benefit of them.
There was a rumour of them coming to Asda but the fact that they stopped the trial at one store seems to have quashed that, if it did the saving in staff time would IMO be enormous,
My Lidl also does not have any self service tills, I wish they did - I always use them at Aldi and Asda.

As well as saving manhours and printing costs changing paper labelling ,the electronic labels give the retailer the capacity to adjust prices dynamically according to footfall at a given part of the day- if they wanted to.
How this would sit with trading law is another matter if the price changed in the time between selecting the item and getting to the till.

Funnily enough, I often find it more of an issue in Aldi, so I was surprised to find short dates in Asda.
By short dates, I don't mean stickered products, just dates shorter than you normally find.
Usually in places like Tesco, Sainsbury's etc., I find longer dates on meat and veg etc., than Aldi.
