The GHIC was an enforced replacement of the EHIC due to Brexit.
So the cost of that replacement was entirely due to Brexit.

The GHIC does not cover Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
The EHIC did cover those countries. Those living in those countries still need to apply for a EHIC However the production of a S1 will allow them access to the state medical facilities, on the same terms as indigenous residents. A production of a S1 means that UK still meet the medical costs of its citizens.

Similarly a S1 produced by UK residents in all the EU countries also allow absorption into that country's medical system.

But as UK still covers the costs of UK citizens via the S1, UK citizens tax resident in other EU countries pay less in social charges (their equivalent of NI) than the indigenous people.

Correct. Considering that according to project fear that we were going to be completely stuffed, health wise when we left, it’s got to be a win. Along with the projected loss of free EU roaming, needing green card for car insurance, more e pensive car insurance, the need for an international driving permit blahdy blahdy blah….

They just were saying the UK has paid out over £311m to EU countries for Brits getting medical assistance in the EU because of the GHIC system.

Awkward but not impossible. Plenty still do it. In the scheme of things, paying a bit more to take a dog to France in a car wouldn’t really be an important reason for remaining in the EU. If you don’t take them, you will have to pay someone to look after them anyway so you may as well just pay up and take Rover with you if you’re a caring dog owner. I would, if I wanted to. Do these people not travel outside the EU on holiday ever or travel to the EU by plane? What do they do with their dogs then?

Some people were impacted by the Brexit. Those who were unaware of the reduction in benefits of the EHIC might have been left without cover.
Those who are in Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway may have needlessly and mistakenly applied for a GHIC
There are umpteen scenarios that meant that Brexit created problems.

The eventuality of a claim not being proved does not constitute a win. So the issue of the EHIC being replaced by the GHIC, because the EHIC became redundant due to Brexit, is hardly a win. It was a cost of implementing the GHIC that means it was a cost to UK.

There are other costs associated with vehicles caused by Brexit. Try exporting a car to EU now compared to pre-Brexit.
For example, the UK MOT is no longer recognised, and a new EU test will be required.
The import costs are greatly increased.

Awkward but not impossible. Plenty still do it.

And it costs them more to do it.
And there's more procedures to complete (hoops to jump through).

If they have applied for something exclusively for UK residents, that’s their stupid fault.

Considering we were supposed to have lost out on health treatment in the EU, I’d say it’s a win in my book.

It never was if you were permanently exporting a vehicle to the EU. You always had to comply with the rules and regs of the country you were permanently exporting it to.
