TBH, I have no idea. I just copied what was there and extended it. I think it’s been like that since the house was built in 1960 so assume it’s okay.

Yes, what was there was fine, but instead of adding a length of timber to the existing ones running lengthways, you should have removed the existing ones and replaced with one long length of timber. The house isn't going to fall down or anything but if you stand on the side of the opening, it will bow in the middle, maybe eventually damaging the ceiling.
In the picture looking down through the hatch from above, the timber on the left looks like it runs full length, which I'd expect, on the right it looks as though it's 2 or 3 pieces which is where the weakness will be.

The timber on the right is one piece! It’s the only piece I didn’t replace. It looks like 3 pieces because the section that formed the original hatch on that piece had been painted white. In this photo, what I did was remove the pieces marked in blue and added the pieces marked in red. That’s okay, isn’t it?

A trip to York today, and the first time Avril had been there, plus my first trip there - using the bus, instead of driving. You see so much more, when are not having to concentrate on driving. We're planing a similar trip on the bus, for next Saturday to Whitby, again on the bus.

The magazines are sealed under the floor for subsequent owners to find and enjoy. A true time capsule that’s around the same age of the house. I suspect they wont be found until the house next needs rewiring.

Went for our usual Sunday morning walk with our friend and her dogs and I saw loads of trees covered with what I thought were spiders webs but looking closer, they were caterpillars!

Recementing a section of what I call 'the chunnel'. Our concrete drive, I laid in two areas, sloping into a shallow V, with where the two join I laid some timber, to allow for movement, and drainage. I topped the timber with a mix of sand and cement, shaped into a shallow U, to act as a drain - this was some 40 years ago. A few weeks ago, a small area of the cement 'chunnel', collapsed, due to the timber below, intentionally rotting away.

This mornings task, was to break up the rest of the cement in the chunnel, compact it down, add more rubble to fill some of the space, and finish it off with cement - 3x mixes, mixed by Avril.

I did the loft hatch in our garage a few weeks back - and basically I just did what you have done

used these as jointing plates for the bit next to the wall - they will be strong enough but don't know if they meet building regs?
