adding a 2nd lightswitch for 1st floor from new loft

It might be a good idea NOT to use the word "current"
Surely, most people know that words can have different meanings, and that the meaning is determined by the context and coherence of the sentence.

Am running cables for the ring main and lighting circuits and then getting an electrician.

Not many, any electricians will willingly work that way around! You need to get your electrician on board first, because he/she will need to sign it off eventually.

I used smart switches and buttons, easier than running wires.
You are showing signs of old age Eric,
I am sure that you (like me) spent hours and hours running cables, making joints, adding relay set ups to make crafty set ups etc etc to achieve exactly what we wanted, it is in our blood, it makes us what we are!
Smart stuff. WiFi, bluetooth etc just does not have the same sense of achievement attached does it?
;)
Still I suppose makes our aches and pains less of a problem and is a damn lot quicker
:giggle:

Yes, you could measure the current voltage or even the current current.

I do agree though that it would be better on DIY forum to choose another word.

Yebut, the wifi stuff makes it so much easier to control from far away, or to program to do fancy things a basic, wired switch, just cannot do.

Depends how much of the solution you just buy, and how much you build and program yourself.

Indeed,
with me it is due to my age and the times I was brought up in that have skewed my thoughts a bit in favour of the ring final and in favour of loop in at ceiling rose.

I just became my allotted three score year and ten a few days ago

I'm about 18 months ahead of you.

And I say bah humbug to all this automation, smart light bulbs, Alexa, let's fiddle with my CH programmer from a bar in Belize, malarkey.

Likewise.

A friend has automated all lights in the house to the point they have no switches, they use a phone app. Just how complicated can it be to use their guest WC which has no window?

Call out to the lady of the house saying "could you come and hold my ****, as I can't see what I'm doing".

That one is one place I won't be going, chances are she'd jump at the chance...

Then boast to anyone and everyone.

Well, that's taking it far, too far. I use them only for my convenience....

They turn Christmas lights on, at dusk, off at 11pm. Likewise, the single, low power drive light. They power the big drive, and garden lights, so we don't have to make our way from the far end of the garden, back to the house, and up the stairs to turn them on. Another, gives my car's battery a quick daily boost charge.
