Small boat crossings

Are asylum seekers are a danger to British women and girls?

The Times recently ran a front page warning one in eight prisoners are now born overseas, with the number convicted of sexual and violent crimes increasing. That the data shows that one in six residents of England and Wales are born outside the UK – and therefore migrants are actually underrepresented in prisons, despite being more likely to be held on remand was not mentioned.

Tim Naor Hilton, the chief executive of Refugee Action, outlined the facts in black and white. “There is no clear or credible evidence that people seeking asylum commit more crimes, and any data suggesting that must be viewed in the context of systemic bias, including in policing.”

We are often told that newcomers to these shores refuse to adopt “British values”, but perhaps those stoking the public’s worst instincts can remember one themselves: in this country, people are innocent until proven guilty. That includes asylum seekers too.

Francis Ryan @ the Guardian

“There is no evidence of increased risk of violence from illegal immigrants and if you find any it’s because of police bias”. Says a campaigner who wants us to welcome them.

Six reasons why boat crossings continue to rise...

In the first three months of this year, people coming from Eritrea made up 20% of new arrivals for the first time. The Eritrean government has been accused of widespread human rights abuses while a famine exacerbated by drought threatens 1 million Eritreans – approximately 20% of the population – according to the World Food Programme.

There are also perceptions that the UK is a safer and more welcoming country for minorities compared with many other countries in continental Europe. Refugee charities have called for new safe and legal routes to be opened for applicants, so they do not have to get into overcrowded boats run by smuggling gangs. The UK governments under Labour and the Tories have declined to do so, usually because of the concern that the country will be overwhelmed and it could act as a “pull factor”.

Smuggling boat gangs have become larger and increasingly professionalised. Prices for journeys have fallen from about €14,000 in 2018 to under €4,000 in 2024, while the numbers on each boat have increased to more than 60.

No surprise they're making their way in such numbers right now - The Channel must be like a mill pond.

But the numbers entering the EU are down.

It is all extremely confusing.

Are you paid to be devil's advocate? Are you Billy Jo?

I don't know who Billy Jo is

But the answer is no. I am someone who is trying very hard to understand all the aspects so that I can assess which proposed solutions might be effective.

Ok DA xx

Have you never wondered why the number of asylum seekers trying to get here from France has doubled, whilst the number entering the EU in the first place has halved. It doesn't make any sense.

They interviewed a guy from Border force yesterday, who basically said, the fear of being sent to Rwanda was making people regularise their immigration status in France. With the 1 in 1 out they will take their chances as France isn't a bad place. He also said there was no commitment from France to do anything when they arrive back, so the same 50 will be back over on the next boat trying again.

We had a deterrent, the numbers fell, we cancelled the deterrent the numbers rose.

Do you remember who he was and where he was interviewed. That would be an interesting interview to see or read about.
