My own perspective is that I used to think it was just a bit of silly fun. Last year, I made what I thought was a harmless joke on here about the Tory manifesto being "gammon bingo". This was the only time I have ever used the word gammon. I got called racist by several posters and it triggered a big argument, which I now know indirectly led to Bod leaving the forum. Since then, I have been trying to get my head round it. I go back and forth between thinking it is utterly ridiculous to call it racist. And sometimes seeing that it might possibly be racist, if only somebody could provide a really good explanation.

It sounds like you can’t accept BOD leaving was your fault.

No, Bod leaving was due to a weird confluence of events. Bod told me himself a little while later on the plumbing forum that it was nothing to do with me.

But the strength of his reaction to the word gammon was the thing that made me take it more seriously. His reaction seemed very genuine. Unlike others who just fake offence for their own political games.

Yes, that is essentially correct. I had seen others on here use the word "gammon" now and again, and it just seemed like a silly joke. But the first time I used it, which was last summer, I received a very strong reaction, especially from Bod. And that made me start thinking about whether it might actually be racist. Much of the time, I still think that is ridiculous. How can teasing people about getting angry and going red in the face be racist. But at other times, I can sort of see a possibility that it might be.

So in essence, the word Gammon as an insult can do all sorts of damage.
