I asked a dealer on auto trader to send a photo of the service history. They said they don't do it for security reasons. I asked for the dates of the services instead but they ignored it.
So is this a thing? I would think it's not unreasonable to see this before setting off on a long journey and parting with a chunk of money.
The dealership has about a dozen cars for sale averaging about 7k each.

So long as there are no personal details I can't see a problem with that.
I suspect there isn't any service history!
You can, of course, get the MOT history from the registration number.
John :)

I have seen plenty of cars for sale where there is a photo of the service book pages. What is interesting from that is you can find out where in the country it has been through its owners - like Scotland by the sea or something - could be rotting - that kind of thing.

Does it have an online service log, or a service book?

But if they can't provide the info to a serious prospective buyer, then I'd walk away

I changed my car a few months ago, and took 7 years service history/receipts/assorted paperwork in with me to the dealer for handover……..
‘Thanks, but we’re not allowed to pass it on, it all gets shredded’

IMO any so called 'car trader' who refuses to pass on service history, then there is something dodgy in the trader's office.
The used car side of my family's businesses would most definitely share any genuine details necessary to secure a sale and that would include any documented service history available.
TIP .. check all docs for forgeries and possible 'duplicates' also be very wary of any new looking histories with the same handwriting and stamp on every page. Very few used vehicles are constantly serviced by the same dealership/trader AND signed by the same person year after year.

With the same pen, may I add.
Op, leave this dealer alone.
If he doesn't want to share his cars service history, probably there's none.
A lot of backstreet dealers buy cars at auction with no paperwork whatsoever.
Sometimes they get lucky and find all documents in the glove box, including service records.
When I bought my Passat, the dealer had a thick folder for it. The previous owner had kept every single receipt related to that car.
The dealer wasn't even shy to show me that the previous owner had now purchased another Passat, much younger.
Genuine dealers don't hide anything.
One more piece of advice: don't trust dealers who pack up cars very tightly.
They do that hoping that you won't have enough space to inspect them properly.

I have called a local VW garage regarding a car's service history for a car I was interested in (Polo) for sale by an independent dealer
and they read our the service history over the phone after supplying them with the reg. Was about 4 years ago.
Not sure if you can do that with other makes though.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've now also heard back from a couple of private sellers. One said he'll only show the history when I get there. Another sent paper work. He had said in the advert it was due a service. He wasn't kidding, the last one was 2 years and 50,000 miles ago.
