I thought it was supposed to take ages? I sent off the application and posted the will off last week. Received a confirmation at 12.38 today saying that they had arrived. At 4.10 I received an email saying it had been granted and I will receive the grant of probate in the post within 10 days. Must be a record!

Computerisation sped the process up, you probably had no IHT to pay. Still impressive

Definitely, although the website said normal turnaround time is 12 weeks. Yeah, no IHT to pay as it was under £650k. Others in similar situations said "you’ll be lucky". Looks like I was!

My mom's took about 5 weeks if I remember correctly

Mums took four weeks from submission to grant. The solicitor who did the conveyancing said his firm was taking three months for the same process, and that in person applications were receiving priority

I think the hold ups are where you involve a bloody solicitor.

When we bought our current house, we had to be on the phone with them at least once every day in the later stages as they kept telling us they had done stuff but clearly hadn't. They grumbled that we kept ringing them and in the end I lost it a bit and told them that we were paying them a small fortune for their services and if they kept on top of things, I wouldn't need to keep on nagging at them.

Took several months when I last did one. However It was an intestasy plus the fact that they had just merged the Cardiff and Bristol probate offices. Also IHT pound of flesh to give. None of which helped.

My brothers took about 14 weeks plus 2 weeks for the grant to arrive by post. This was late 2021. No IHT to pay as it was a relatively small estate

Ex is waiting on one now. Her Dad's Will. They said approx 16 weeks! Been about 2 so far i think.

If you have an estate over the IHT limit its best to have sufficiently liquid assets to avoid paying interest on OHT. An elderly neighbour with half a dozen houses sold some in anticipation of his death to fund the tax.
