"REFUTE"

Why is this modern incorrect use of this term (" I refute that") when they have not refutted it at all?

To refute is to prove that an accusation is wrong and not purely to deny it!

I think it could be poloticians that deliberately use this word so wrongly. might have even been a certain Mr Archer used it first
Erm, so, the correct word should be repudiate.
 
It would be interesting to try and explain to someone unfamiliar with pay & display car parks the importance of getting a ticket, because if you don't you might get given a ticket, and you don't want to get given a ticket, so you should go to the machine and buy a ticket.

Reminds me a bit of the instruction manual explaining the game of cricket and the ins/outs and not outs!
Makes that cat in a box problem look easy by comparison!
