US Presidents don't do favours when it comes to issues like critical military bases. Biden was in agreement. But Starmer delayed the deal to get Trump's approval. Lammy said they wouldn't sign it without the nod from Trump. I don't know what US thought was in it for them, but they must have thought it was good for them. Trump's motive now isn't clear. The best explanation I have read today is that he is equating Mauritius' claim to the Chagos Islands with Denmark's claim to Greenland. And if he can make the argument about Mauritius having no rights, then he thinks he can do the same with Denmark.

It is a good deal for the US. We are paying more to rent it, than the US is paying us.
