I let him book it I didnt book it but my cherry picker had been highlighted as moving when I wasnt at work. they then pulled our drivers cards

You were put in a very difficult situation, because on one hand you were worried that your friend might get fired and he really needs his job. On the other you are aware of the risk the employer has under the Health and Safety at Work etc. knowingly allowing a drunk employee to work etc. So once you knew he couldn't cover the call, and since you were fit to do the job, you felt obligated to do the work. You then felt you were in an impossible situation, because of the trouble he would be in.
