I've got about 5 beds in the garden I want to fill with plants.

What would be best to plant/plants this time of year?

Are there any that come back every year?

In the gaps I was thinking about filling with bark? Is that wise?

I find bark clippings are pretty good at keeping the weeds at bay. Yes, they can blow about onto the lawn or patio, so you really want some sort of edging.

Geraniums. You can get a second flowering if you chop them back. Not a massive range of colours but they're tough.
