I've got about 5 beds in the garden I want to fill with plants.

What would be best to plant/plants this time of year?

Are there any that come back every year?

In the gaps I was thinking about filling with bark? Is that wise?

Amateur gardener here, be nice...

I find bark clippings are pretty good at keeping the weeds at bay. Yes, they can blow about onto the lawn or patio, so you really want some sort of edging.

Geraniums. You can get a second flowering if you chop them back. Not a massive range of colours but they're tough.

Toadflax [Linaria purpurea]. Nice and tall.

If you have 5 beds in the garden why not put duvets and pillows on them?

Have a wander around and look in other gardens, parks etc. for things that are in flower now that you like. Daffodils, tulips, bluebells etc. Make a list, put it somewhere safe, and buy them in the autumn (mostly as bulbs) for next year. Maybe think about where you’ll plant them and leave space. (You can do the same thing at other times of year; if the garden is looking boring in e.g. October, see what looks good in the neighbours’ gardens and get it for next year.) The Plant Net app is good for identifying things you don’t know.

Right now, look for summer-flowering bulbs that you can plant. Alliums, lilies, etc

It’s a little bit early for summer-flowering bedding plants right now, but it’s not a bad time to order them. You can order good value plug plants.

Shrubs, e.g. roses, and other perennials, can also be planted now.

If I were you:

- Plant one or two roses.

- Plant a clematis or two if there is a wall for it to climb.

- Look out for shrubs that you like. Flowering currants are looking nice right now.

- Plant some hardy geraniums, e.g.”Roxanne”.

- Hardy fuchsia.

- Red Hot Poker.

- Lots of bulbs of every kind.

- Sprinkle some poppy seeds.

- If you have shady spots, hostas.

One supplier who keep sending me their catalogue is J Parker’s. They often have variety pack.

Good luck!

P.S. spreading a tonne of compost first might be a good idea; how is the soil?
