Since moving my regular household debit payments, and day to day spending to LHV, to gain some interest on the account (4.2%), all has worked splendidly, until yesterday afternoon. Yesterday, I tried, and tried, to order a take-away for delivery, but the site repeatedly went to a long, very cryptic, error. Switching to another banks card, it worked at the first attempt.

Are some debit cards not acceptable, to some organisations?

They vary, takeaways are a target for fraudsters because it involves a relatively small payment to test if the card is accepted. LHV may not have the set up to carry out proper checks: did they not ask for you to confirm with a pass code? Usually sent to your phone or email. Using an app is generally more efficient.

I was ordering on my PC, via their website, I used it several times before successfully, with a NatWest card. This time, it allowed me to enter the card details, then as usual said 'don't refresh the browser, just wait' - whilst it validated, then a DOS like cryptic message, mentioning error repeatedly.

There was no verification passcode request.

It's a financial institution based in Nigeria.

Estonia, backed by uk.gov guarantee.

I got fed up with the zero interest accounts offered by the UK big banks, where you have meet certain conditions of putting so much in per month, a minimum number of DD's, special offers, and discounts on ice creams I didn't want. I just wanted a plain simple, straight forward current account, where they paid interest, with no stupid frills, or conditions. Better still, they have real, live people, on the help system, LHV hits the spot.

I tried one called Wise, but it didn't have the uk.gov guarantee, but the main problem I found with it was the several steps of confirmation, and getting each one right, before you could move your own money, then the long delays, until they approved the move - so I emptied the account, and closed it.

I had that with a national tyre fitter order, assumed they’d been hacked as they took the money twice but it was at my end that it went wrong.

The non-UK thing may be the issue. The takeaway may have chosen to block non-UK cards. Or your bank may think they're dodgy.

I'd suggest buying some proper food and rattling those pots and pans. Can't remember when we last got a takeaway.

I opened a monza business account a few weeks ago. They froze a transaction; all sorted over their app.

It was very frustrating because you can’t talk to a person. It made me realise that we don’t really have control of our funds.

Best putting day-to-day spending onto a credit card. You get more legal protection, should be able to get cashback. Ours is paid in full every month automatically by direct debit.

So for anything I buy on the credit card, I get cashback and get interest on that money that remains in the bank account until the end of the month.

Good idea. I used or use my Amex charge card in a similar way, but the £300 yearly fee sort of offset the gains
