How do you see your self politically

HWM you are slightly falling victim to lefty propaganda. Right-wing is all about working, bringing up a family and caring for your own and those around you, which was normality before Blair. The left have made 'right- wing' an insult, which is why you are trying to put yourself at a distance from it. Don't allow the left to control your thoughts and speech... you are right-wing, be proud of it.
I assume you're old enough to remember Alf Garnett. "Up the workers", but a lot of right wing traits. Stood up in the bath to salute when the national anthem played....

But ask this: "What use is my house TO ME if I am near the end of life, and need 24 hour care? £1500 a week is a scandal, but leave that also for now. If you have a £500k house, that will cover 6 years ish. That's a great deal, with inflation and rising fees covered by the state, and no bills from day 1.
They already take the money, down to a quite low limit, or a lien, don't they?

If you get dementia so need full time care, the accommodation element should come from the house value. I'm not sure whether it does now.

Aesop's fable about the sun and the wind well illustrates the difference between the left (the wind) and the right (the sun)...

Edit
* People need to wise up. IHT is a whole other thread, so leave that. We need to shed the, "My Mum n Dad worked all their lives for what they have, nobody should take their home." line, cos it translates to, "Somebody should pay (not me though); and my inheritance should be for me alone".

Or, put 5% on all taxes except fuel, VAT and energy. Let's see how that one lands lol.

I agree that if people have property assets they should contribute, but I'd like to see a cap on how much they have to contribute.
Haven't given the size of the cap any thought.

But (I may have made this up) many people use trusts etc to circumvent what might be considered a fair proposal. As to Filly's note about a cap- fair point. Theresa May suggested £26k back then, didn't she? How about £50k?

Very interesting that only 1 person, as far as I can see, has suggested they are left wing

I was a firm follower of the coelition so I guess that makes me fairly middle of the road

I lived under communism for almost a year, Kibbutzim are almost pure communism, proper Marxist stuff.

It weren't bad at all although I couldn't get my head round peoples children being raised by the collective and parents having only a few hours access here and there, seemed a bit weird.

Communism hates the family, or anything that might teach children ways other than communism. Look at the state-induced break up of families and family values in our country since the 60s, and the constant moves against private education and home schooling.
