Can't you work some of this out for yourself![]()
1. The laptop is secondhand and may have been on the net under it's prior owner.
2. The sale to you would be traceable, therefore the mac address to you is traceable.
3. If you bought the laptop from new many manufacturers are now keeping records of mac addresses to machine serial numbers (fight against terror driven I guess) and many retailers are starting to hold serial numbers against customer credit card details (some even print the serial number of the PC on the till receipt).
Police can (and regularly do) trace equipment in this way.
Any clearer?

A person is guilty of an offence if—
(a) he causes a computer to perform any function with intent to secure access to any program or data held in any computer;
I don't see how a connection to a wireless access point with the intention of accessing the Internet can be an offence under Section 1 above.
Hardly the same thing CLF and I'm sure even you know that.Nor do I big fella, its tantermount to using someones aerial is it not. and that aint illegal
I quoted the salient part of Section 1, which is the section that was referenced by Adam_151.megawatt said:Quote it all
No more clearly that accessing the site via one's own network.megawatt said:Connecting to the internet in an unauthorised manner to access this site (certainly a program and data) is clearly a breach of (a) & (b).
But (a) and (b) didn't apply, and paragraph (b) is following by the word "and". At the very least, the Act is ambiguous.You know at the time that you're not supposed to be doing it so (c) applies.
...which wasn't referenced by Adam_151.All pretty well quantified by section 2.
If you say so. I haven't read the judgements for all unauthorised system access prosecutions, so I wouldn't know.This act is what all unauthorised system access prosecutions are brought under.
I don't see what this topic has to do with any other previous topic, but if you think it's clear cut then I don't know why you've made it appear so muddled.I know we've had some differences of opinion over legal issues S but surely this one couldn't be clearer![]()

It seems to me that you're intent on using your neighbours internet connection and just want everyone to tell you that its okay.
Do what you think is right and accept the consequences![]()
