Power cuts ?

I believe we're setting up an Argument Room for this kind of thing.

You can't discuss nuclear fusion/fission without considering how to process the waste (the risky bit), how to stop industrial accidents (meltdown), and disposal of waste.

Tim West is going to tell us all how you diminish the half-life of a radioactive element.

Over to you Tim.

(He'll get the Nobel Prize for his answer as no-one has ever been able to do it.)

Time for some facts rather than the usual Joe-90 trail of unsupported opinion.

An interesting recent article on disposal of waste plutonium ...

http://www.shef.ac.uk/materials/news/plutonium.html

And some quite heavy reading on the physics of plutonium recycling ...

It is clear to anyone who's brain has a reasonable half-life ;) that fossil fuel generated electricity has a finite (and relatively short) future.
Green energy sources such as wind, tidal, solar etc quite clearly aren't capable of meeting the grid's needs as current technology stands so Nuclear is the obvious candidate.
The key issues with this (as others have mentioned) are safety of the plant whilst in production and disposal of the waste products.

From what I can see, scientific opinion seems quite divided on the proposals for both and it will be interesting to see how this develops over the next few years.

France is a great example of the benefits (though there are debates even there about safe disposal of waste).

When the Civaux nuclear power plant comes on line sometime in the next 12 months, France will have 56 working nuclear plants, generating 76% of her electricity.

Undisputable fact is though that we need nuclear power (unless a viable alternative is found) so we need to make it work.

Megawatt says:

"From what I can see, scientific opinion seems quite divided on the proposals for both and it will be interesting to see how this develops over the next few years. "

So even though scientific thought on the matter is divided - no-one is allowed to hold a view that meggawatt doesn't agree with.

Says it all about the bloke really.

Oilman and Mega are spot on about you fella.

All you're interested in doing is provoking an argument.

Mega's last post is informative and his/her synopsis of the current and future position with respect to energy provision well thought out.

I would concur that the safety of PWR's and of the disposal of their waste products is subject to some disagreement globally but that doesn't mean we don't need Nuclear power which is what I believe Mega was suggesting.

Why don't you try offering facts rather than conjecture, supposition and attempts to make things personal.

You add little value to these debates.

Are you serious Joe-90 or was the last post an attempt at humour?

Mega quoted facts you've quoted tabloid journalism

What next, Apolcalpse now or Nuclear Holocaust's for Dummies.

You really are quite unbelievable and it is clear to see from this thread alone what others have said about you recently.

I also will no longer be replying to any of your posts in this forum.

Happy arguing

Of course you won't - you'll get your butt kicked.

It's just so childish to say your bit and run away.

Oil is running out and so is uranium. Bio fuel is a comedy as is wind and solar.

Would you like to talk about it? (he won't - he's gone to hide behind the settee).

Tell you what then 'fella' YOU take me on (he won't).
You add little value to these debates.

All these posts ending in (he won't) really make me chuckle ... A bit like Baby On Board signs in cars ... They make what difference exactly? ;)

Rescue crews take extra care to look for a baby or toddler that may have wandered away from its un-conscious parents after a crash.
