we have an 'H' reg Honda Concerto that is on its last legs. she only needs to limp on for another 8 weeks, after which, i have the opportunity to buy a newer car.

once started and then run until warm, the car doesn't like being switched off again and refuses to start. leaving it 10 min's seems to work. a little bit inappropriate if you are at traffic lights and you happen to stall.

i disconnected the air filter intake allowing the car to by-pass the air filter, and suck in as much (dirty) air as she wants. i don't remember the air filter ever being changed!

it seems to have done the trick.

however, will this be ok for 8 weeks, or will the lack of clean air be too debilitating?

Try cleaning the filter by vacuum or tapping it (better still buy a new one).
New plugs might help to.

cheers jon.

does that mean the old girl won't last without the above tinkering?

i mean, what do you think would happen if i just removed the filter completely?

put an air filter in,for the sake of a couple of quid its worth it,any **** that gets sucked in can destroy your engine

Have you got any idea how much petrol you could have saved for the sake of £5 doh

8 weeks without an air filter  OMG you`ll wreck the engine in 6 weeks ;)

Brindley Honda at Cannock, Staffs.

£18.51 to be precise.

the car may be old, but i have only ever fitted genuine Honda parts.

everything still works on that old car, with very little upkeep. ;)

it is no accident that the Accord is the most reliable car on the planet.

i have to settle for a VW Passat next. ho hum.

At least you're getting a proper car then

Go to a motor factors and save yourself a tenner. £18 for an air filter is like paying £6 for a pint of Stella. Don't worry about it not being genuine, it's probably made in the same factory but doesnt have Honda stamped on it!

this is misguided and an overused statement of all dodgy back street garages.

the car runs great now i have a new filter. ;)

So you think Honda have set up their own special factory to make air filters just for their cars then?
