Will the old girl limp on?

Thanks johnjb. certainly a more informative answer.

i now understand that a car company specifies parts that meet a standard quality criteria, and that some companies loosely interpret that criteria and sell the parts more cheaply.

i also understand that body panels and exhausts are best bought genuine, as are some mechanical parts.

i also understand that in certain cases a non genuine part can be a better quality part than a genuine one, but this is extremely rare.

with reference to the Rover, i think you will find that it is the Rover that is a glorified Honda and not the other way round. my Concerto has a Honda engine as did some of the earlier Rovers. smart ar$e. ;)

what does stfu mean?

I was trying to give the concerto a little compliment. Glorified means slightly better and as a pointed out, it is a glorified Rover 200. If you wish to deem it as glorified Honda then thats up to you.

If you wish to be pedantic then they are both the same car and should be called the R8 as this is the codename for the body and chassis style. The only difference was engine and badge spec.

As you quite rightly point out "earlier" Rovers did use the Honda D16A6 SOHC and the D16A8 DOHC engines up until 1991. They then reverted to the Rover T series engine.

As with stfu, google it. You want us to do all the work for you??

thanks john, all i wanted was an intelligent reply, i am not a troll and i bare no hard feelings. ;)

i am very naive about vehicle mechanics and found it difficult to understand that buying genuine parts was considered wrong. the air filter change was the only thing i have done to that car, the rest was done by Brindley Honda. even my Vauxhall mechanic (vivaro van) was impressed at the level of service at the Honda dealership.

i get the gist about the 'glorified' thing and consider the matter closed.

i will stfu, at least until next time.

why are mechanics so short tempered and rude?

why are mechanics so short tempered and rude?

I'm not a mechanic!! Yet i may be short tempered and rude!!!

If you feel that is the response you have got off people here then take two minutes to read your comments first. Alot of those are derogatory and egotistical. If you know nothing about the motor trade then why feel that you have to argue with peoples, in most cases, valued opinions that come with 20+ years time served???

I understand the manufacturing processes that occur in ALL trades, not just vehicles, and also the economics that make it viable. Its a pretty simple thing to grasp when you look at it from a logical point of view. I don't know you and what your level of education is but i would have assumed that most people that have a certain degree of common sense would be able to grasp the concept.

If you don't understand something ask a civil question. Do not start an argument about something you have little or no knowledge on. This site is dedicated to people like myself, in a particular trade, helping people that have no experience in it to help themselves. If you find that the advice or help you get is worthless then by all means do not re enter the site and follow your own "expert" judgement. One has to ask why you logged on here in the first place.

If you wanted a structured and informative argument then you, by all means, can have one. But it is not healthy for the site or yourself because looking at the responses you already have it is not favourable to you. In all honesty if i were a mechanic i would have told you to try something that would have really b******s your car by now!!

I myself am a Heating Engineer and participate in another forum mostly, giving advice, but came here as i was having a problem that i had little knowledge about. I chose to act on advice that was given me because these people have EXPERIENCE that i would not be able to gain from ten minutes under the bonnet!!

I hope to god that your heating fails!! Please by all means come and see me!!

Oh and by the way, if you can google what stfu means then surely you can google after market parts and find the relevant information that disproves your argument yourself?? I know i have and could provide plenty for you!! Its not hard to do and i give you a chance to redeem yourself and expect an apology to all the Mechanics (note spelling, not grease monkeys!!! And it starts with a capital letter pretty much like god although i dont believe in him so he only gets a small g, but i digress) that have chosen to, at first, help you with your minor problem which you have already agreed cured the fault.

Quite a few of the replies in this topic were from me. I don't feel that any of my replies were rude or short tempered.

none whatsoever. you were level headed and polite.

the initial responses to the fact that i used a genuine Honda part were not quite so polite, and that it was considered "stupid".
