Im pricing up a job to install power to a portakabin (2 way board) approx 25 metre from DB, using 10mm swa running through factory at around 3 metre height to a point outside, the board is old mem, someone said that i should not be coming from DB (3phase 24 way) and should be coming from mains board, who is right ? it will only be used for general office work.

Who said you shouldnt run from the board and what reason did they give?

What system is this, TNS, TNCS? could have a bearing on how you intent to earth your new portacabin installation.

Its a chap who works in the factory, always sticking his nose ! He reckons hes a qualified sparks but I have my doubts. It is a tncs system, I was thinking of putting an rcd in on the wall before the cable exits am I going over the top here ? it will be easily accesable as its next to the door leading to the kabin, -

Still doesn't really answer the question. What size submain is feeding the DB, and what is the rating of the protective device back at the main DB?

From what you've said so far it sounds as if there may be the necessary capacity, it's hard to imagine anyone installing a 24 way board with a small submain, and 4x 16A isn't exactly heavily loaded. Still, can't just assume these things, you need to check...

What is the supply to it? What is the expected load of the portakabin? What sort of heating?
RCD at the supply end of an SWA isn't really needed, RCDs will be needed in the portakabin and would probably be better at that end.

its a 35mm swa (i will double check ) supply to this board, 100 amp mains, the portakabin is ready wired with a small panel heater, will seat 1 - 2 people, (its only small) .. The mains tails in are 25mm and the earth is 16mm,

TN-C-S?

DONT take the earthing system out to the portakabin. You should be treating it as a caravan.....or get your 17th head on.

Which is why I said "Get your 17th head on".....

That reg could be easily complied with, but can also be far too easily disregarded by folk. Many will read it and disregard with "That doesn't apply to me then" and think nothing more of it.

With TN-C-S, you need to give far more thought than a passing glimpse.
