definately gas if you have an existing chimney (or outside wall for balanced flue). if you have a powercut you still have heat and they look much better. Electric heating is expensive!
avoid flueless (catalytic) gas fires

Gas fires are very good at using gas; electric ones are very good at using electricity. Neither type would make a good Prime Minister.

IF installed correctly and IF serviced properly (and annually) I might agree with you. Wouldn't want one in my house though.
