I need a gas pipe capping off (15mm pipe) I could do it myself with a compression fitting but I'm a bit scared of gas (plus it's under the floorboards), how much am I looking at for a professional to do it?

yeah that's why i'm not using a compression fitting and also why i'm not doing it (don't have the equipment anyway)

With respect Caffrey, you could have phoned several ny now and had a pretty good idea. For what it's worth, if you were easy access, not picky about time of call etc, we would charge about £45 plus vat. I bet you could get it done for less than £20 if you spent some time phoning around, and not be choosy.

But geograophy plays a part in all this.

Same street about £30.

Somewhere else £45.

Thats if floor boards up.

Its not correct but I see many compression caps probably used by a DIYer!

Can't phone during the day as i'm stuck at work - just looking for a ballpark figure, i'm in the northeast if it's any help.

easy access to where it needs capping off - it's not a hard job maybe 10 mins at most....

Where's your gas meter? It could take 10 minutes to empty the cupboard! Shoes, hoover, shopping bags, ironing board, old tins of paint, recycling rubbish, coats.......

Tightness test.....clamp on, meter out.....cut and vent (to an extent).....clip to support.....solder the joint.....meter back in.....tightness test.....purge and relight.....cup of tea.....tools away ;)

Have you seen the price of a drink lately ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not wanting this done for peanuts - just want it done right. I understand people need to make a living, didn't expect a lecture!.

Easy access to gas cutoff valve (for a change) Floorboards are already up where it needs (I think) capping off

Ooops, you've gone and done it now

Btw when I said accesss I meant ease of accesss to property. We've all had to tudge 10 minutes with tools in hand from a parking space to a house, and back again every time you need more kit or parts.

heh, I didn't really explain it well so my bad.
I know how long it takes me (i've done copper work before)
slice pipe, prepare, add flux - heat up and add solder to the mix - takes me 2 mins.

No idea how long it takes to test though so sorry about that, didn't take that into account. tbh would anyone bother testing this anyway?

Yes, they would (I hope).

Of course, the costs of doing the job isn't just the few minutes to solder, or even the time for the test. You have to get there, do the job, do papereork, get paid (most of the times!), and get away. You,ve already spwent some time on the phone talking, and you havce the paperwork in the evening.

Some would say that is part of being self employed, and it is, but an on the books man gets paid for ALL his work related activities, and some that strictly aren't

As I said earlier, a fair rate IMO is about £50 + VAT if you registered, but some will do it for a lot less. But you still have to make time for that nphone call.

I never complained about the cost of it, I originally asked what I would be expecting - 50 quid for peace of mind is fine by me, we all need to make a living after all. I'm currently trying to get in touch with the tradesman that originally fitted it for me 15 years ago.

I always make the job easier for any trade if I can!
