A thirty hour week might be possible for those in the public sector.
Raise taxes and borrow to pay for the shortfall in productivity and of course hire more lazy barstewards to do non jobs.
Meanwhile back in the real world those in the private sector will continue to work longer and longer hours for less and less income.

Oh hear this...Ed Miliband will also freeze energy prices, so good news for consumers, but also bad news for many, as job loses will come from Utility companies who may no longer afford higher minimum wages for many of their workers in UK call centres, and possibly take customer services abroad! more job loses on the way!
Labour does not seem to have the right idea how to steer back Britains economy on the right path, it is heading for the worst.
I know for fact, there are employers who strictly cannot afford minimum wages, they have shut down their businesses and packed it up altogether and many employers are now looking for jobs themselves.
A guy who used to run a small business manufacturing printed circuit boards, used to employ young school leavers as apprentices, gave them a good start in life, and also employed a few skilled workers, and then this minimum wage came into force, he couldn't run his business in profit, with higher wage bill, low demand for printed circuit boards as many of his customers moved their businesses to China, Hungry, and other East European countries, on top of that he had to pay for the escalating cost of disposing off used chemicals under strict EU environmental regulations, all leaded products had to be discarded, he decided enough was enough and he just packed up his business, and became a plumber!
The present Government just realised how bad some of these regulations are, to the extent they asked many local Councils to go easy on planing regulations to kick start our economy in the building industry, allowing people to build bigger and better extensions, without rejecting too many planning applications.

So basically Mike this guy was running his business on cheap labour and kicked out most of the youngsters when they finished their apprenticeships?
Ever worked in a printed circuit board industry? you start with sheets of copper clad boards and saw them on machines, with so much fiber glass dust, you wear breathing masks, and your hands are itchy with dust everywhere! then you got to deal with chemicals, drilling millions of small holes on PCB drilling machines, handling art work layouts both on cad cam based and also older tape version art work, photography kills to reduce images to scale, programming drilling data, changing tools, and finally finishing off boards and giving each one a visual check, screen printing, handling solder resist paints, curing ovens, not many kids would stick around for much longer themselves!

Yes I have. He sounds like a backyard workshop rather than a professional manufacturer. I can also move on to automated pcb assembly lines and flow soldering techniques.
The Labour party are just doing what they do best.
Making promises of improving everybody's lives but with absolutely no idea of how to go about it in a practical way.
They are well known to be the 'spend, spend, spend - borrow, borrow, borrow' party.

Well it's a good job the minimum wage got rid of those jobs then, so much better to have very high youth unemployment instead.
Didn't Norman Tebbet once describe the unemployed as a reserve labour force?

Do you know he started his business before you were even born! before computers were born, much of the Art work was done on acetate film using black tapes and sticky pads, and then photographically reduced to actual size 1:1, As I am in Electronics, I did one art work on a 2:1 scale for a product I designed back in 1986, that product is still selling to date, having just sold one last week!
Things have obviously changed a lot due to Cad cam and computers, that time the guy had to use a different approach to programme hole positions from the actual cross hairs on an artwork and now you just use printed circuit layout programmes and send layout and gerber files and drilling data via emails, so easy now.
I make my own boards at home and can design a new board layout in just a few hours and then make a professional looking board in just under an hour!
I use a clear film and laser printer, print the layout, cut a photoresist board, lay the artwork film over it and expose under an ultraviolet light for about 120 seconds, develop it in less than 15 seconds, and put it in an etching tray with fresh heated Ferric chloride solution and in less than 20 minutes you have a prototype board and all it now needs is drilling.
This is how I make one offs, as most of my job is like making one off prototypes, any production work is outsourced, I used to use the above guy until he packed up and told me he was making no money and many of his customers, some quite big ones took their work to China for complete assembly of their products. and many companies just packed up as were unable to compete with so fast growing industry.

Exactly, and then when they qualify and can earn more money, they get the boot and are left with a trade of limited value.
It's extremely unethical.
