Hive; what do I need?

Hello all,

I have a potterton performa 28 boiler, no tanks, thermostatic valves on most rads.

Boiler is in a bedroom cupboard.
All I have to control heating / hot water is this.....

I have no [thermostat?] on any wall, anywhere in the house.

I would like to be able to:

- easily programme the heating without having to kneel in the semi-dark at the boiler itself
- easily flick the heating on / off, if it gets a bit parky / toasty, again without having to go upstairs into a cupboard
- potentially be able to flick the heating on / off etc from my phone.

What bits would I need to replace, and what with?
What (Hive, for example) bits or sets would I need to buy?

I'm guessing something to replace the (programmer?) in the photo, something akin to a thermostat that would be fitted to a wall, and something like a modem, to connect it all to the 'net?
Any help / advice / links appreciated

A Honeywell T6R would be a great option

I'm still confused, the linked item has a stand ergo it sits on a shelf.

All fine and dandy, but how will that "communicate" with the (Grasslin?) (programmer?) already wired to the boiler?
In other words, if I bought the thing you linked to, would it come with everything "in the box" for me to achieve my previously-stated requirements?

Apologies, I've just found an answered question on Amazon; "It comes with a receiver that connects directly to the boiler."

I think that means it will (compatibility assumed) do what I want it to

You'd need to bypass the Grässlin, as you would with any new programmer, but fortunately this makes installation much easier as you can use the connectors on the back of the Grässlin to hook up your T6

yes but only to cover up the hole that would be there if you remove it, if you use the wiring for the Grasslin to connect your new choice of thermostat ( I would ) then the Grasslin is not connected to anything and not doing anything, just as another note I noticed that Amazon are doing a deal for the Hive supplied and installed for £149, this is for the dual channel but can be used as a single channel , only downside I seen was a comment that someone had bought one and that BG who carry out the install could not give an appointment for 2 months, whether this is true or not I dont know maybe someone will read this who has purchased one will be able to comment

The dual channel Hive has an internal link to Live that the single channel does not have

And the OPs boiler is a potterton Performa which only uses 240V switching , you need to google more before giving out shoite advice

The advice is accurate. The Single Channel Hive is NOT the same as Dual Channel Hive are different

The terminals to use on the Hive receiver are different depending on whether it is a Single Channel Hive or a Dual Channel Hive.

So you are telling me that the dual channel hive can not be used to control only the heating on the OPs boiler ?

Can you not understand the diagram ? Of course the Dual Channel Hive can control the boiler in heating mode PROVIDED it is connected correctly and the question I ask below iabout safety devices is taken into account.

Connecting the boiler Live and Switched Live ( Brown and Orange in the diagram ) to Hive terminals 1 and 3 on the Single Channel Hive will allow the Hive to control the boiler but that will not work if it is a Dual Channel Hive.

A question, Is the 230 V supply on Terminal 1 of the terminal block permanently connected or is it switched ON and OFF by safety devices ? Reason for asking is that if it is switched OFF by safety devices to prevent the boiler operating then the permanemt Live for the receiver in the Dual Channel Hive would by-pass those safety device when the Hive was calling for Heating.

Brigadier,if phone/internet connection is not really required. Then this salus (ok there cheap & cheerful) may be an alternative wireless idea.

your existing grasslin timer would be exchanged to the integral salus bc module,use the existing grasslin lead to connect 4 spade connectors to the salus bc module.

then its a wireless connection to the programmable room unit,move the programmable unit around to where your happy with it or wall mount it. Being programmable it offers time & temperature control although sometimes over complicated. Or just use manually.

As mentioned salus are budget cheap,the honeywell unit mentioned by Muggles is a superior product buts needs some hard wiring. The salus simply replaces your grasslin so simplifies installation.

That is the cheapest and easiest solution, but you said you wanted to connect your phone to control the heating, you cant with that system
