Hi

I am having problem getting an electrician. I am doing a self build and had a guy lined up to install my shower extractor fan electrics etc. Since the relaxing of covid he has found a job for a few months so I am in the lurch a little.

I have all the electrical gear he/she needs apart from a shower isolator and extractor fan.
Can someone recommend a brand model please?
I was thinking of a pull cord isolator but is this old fashioned there is a bedroom next door so a cooker style is option to. Bathroom has shower at 10KW with toilet sink, the bathroom is small at under 6m2.

Yes I know the electrician may like to choose his own stuff but I want everything ready on site for when he/she turns up hopefully next week.
Yes I know work is notifiable etc please don't lecture me I am just looking for advice on products please?

Thanks

For shower pull cord - Crabtree 50A definitely the best.

For 'cooker style' - it's just a switch; it doesn't know what it controls. Use a well-known brand.
The 50A ones are usually (I think) two-gang vertical switches which don't look as good.

Up to you which you choose.

In-line fans installed in the loft are better.

You don't actually have to have an isolation switch at all. Most fit them but it is not a requirement and is something else to fail. For maintenance switch off at the CU.

Fit a local isolation switch.
Or in an emergency, find the garage keys, rush out to the garage wet and naked, crawl over the rubbish in the way, and turn off the CU.
Your choice.

Did he say his CU was in the garage? What sort of emergency do you envisage? If it really was that serious it would be a reg surely.

Listen to what the electricians here are advising, and do fit a local isolator.

How do you know it isn’t when you don’t own a copy of the wiring regulations?

I bought the Crabtree isolator. It can then be mounted locally easily i think. Left message on sparks phone so hopefully he calls back!

Blimey that was a touch of deja vu and I had to take a double look. If it wasn't for the varnished woodwork rather than white paint that would have been one of my flats where the tenant repaired the shower unit when the overtemp sensor tripped.

And that Winston is why I will follow MI's which sofar have always included fitting a local isolator. Regs or not MI's are there for a reason and this looks like a very good reason.
