It's butter first, then jam, then cream!
Exactly how I do it. Filly's post made it sound like he doesn't use butter. Surely not?
Biggest treat when young was to dress the scones as above, then put the two halves together. Then sink your teeth in. SLOWLY!

The only issue is that cream is not butter. If you whipped it a bit longer, then maybe....
The consistency of the jam makes it a better base for a cream topping than the other way round.

No, cream is thicker and not disturbed when the runny jam is put on top of it.
Taken out of the back door of the barn we are staying in with a long exposure on my iPhone. Pitch black to the naked eye though.
