    Suspended ceiling made with 4x2s

No, you are right. And the 4x2 on its edge will be stronger. I am going on site now to take a look.

    Suspended ceiling made with 4x2s

I think it supports the landing, I will finish in 18mm or 25mm ply. The staircase man will add a 25mm-32mm "redwood" or some other material on it. I think on one side, that which is over the door as in the photo, it will be my platform taking the load.

    EPS70 insulation

Yes, PIR ("rigid") boards have better thermal parameters. But I was asking if the EPS70 would be appropriate in the flat roof joists for other reasons, as it is made for floors and walls. It is a cold flat roof, a one story side extension attached to the side of the house below the gables...

    EPS70 insulation

I have excess EPS70 Kay Metzeler 120mm insulation, could I use it in between joists in a flat roof instead of rigid?

    Suspended ceiling made with 4x2s

It is a platform on which I will install a staircase quarter landing. As the staircase passes over a small ensuite bathroom, I will fix plasterboards on the underside of the joists. The width is about 1.2m, the span 1.8m. Because I want to maximise the ceiling height below and minimise the...

    Suspended ceiling made with 4x2s

I am building a suspended ceiling over a small bathroom. I have opened pigeon holes on opposing walls to fit C24 4x2 joists laid on their flat side, not on their edge. The clear span is 1800mm and the bearing into the walls is 95mm. I have spaced the 4x2s 195mm apart (100mm gaps between joists)...

    Door linings wastage

I would bolt/clamp two pieces together, overlapping where they need to join by say 50mm, then I would cut both with a mitre saw at an angle, in two directions, the vertical and the depth. If I were using the chop saw I think the boards would be laid flat on the base, I would use a 30-45 degree...

    Door linings wastage

I have been fixing door linings and my doors are about 2.3m tall, and the door linings timbers are 4.2m tall, so I have lots of leftover pieces of 1.9m! Could I connect two smaller pieces to make a 2,3m length? Is that something a carpenter might do?

    Stick welding

That is exactly what I was thinking I should do, bolt the same plate rather than welding it. So I have tried to weld it, it was a nightmare, the horizontal top seam was OK, but the vertical was a disaster. Not sure if I can even take it off! I would have to use the angle grinder to cut the...

    Stick welding

I need to weld a plate about 400mm x 150mm x 10mm onto a 152mm universal column on its flanges thereby closing off the gap, in order to strengthen an existing weld. The plate will straddle over the existing joint/weld. Please see photo. As can be seen, two of the welds are vertical. I am not a...

    Hardwall on thermalite blocks

My plasterer sprinkles water with a garden hose on to the thermalite blocks, which absorb water like crazy. He says if he does not do that the blocks simply pull out all the moisture from the hardwall causing cracks within very short time. When I say "sprinkles", I mean literally drenches, and...

    Kitchen and other rooms downlights

Ah thank you very much that is exactly what I am going to do for the whole house, and hopefully no need to cut open holes in the ceilings.

    Kitchen and other rooms downlights

Could anyone suggest very slim downlights? I would like to install the slimmest downlights possible because their positions may well fall on joists. The thinnest I have found on amazon are about 30mm. My ceilings are made of 12.5mm plasterboard fixed into 12.5mm plywood. Above that joists. I...

Fixing internal door linings on aerated block walls

What is the name / make of the adhesive I should be using to secure bolts or plus into aerated concrete blocks? For fixing the door linings: 1. I cannot use two screws side by side, as is the custom, I can only drill into the centre of the block to avoid cracking 2. The expanding foam will not...

    Large rectified tiles

You are right. I was in a kitchen showroom earlier today, they had very large gloss tiles on the floor, I could see many reflections, and I could see the tiles distorting the reflections, and there were breaks in the reflections from tile to tile. I thought you would need to have successive...

    Large rectified tiles

I have a few bedrooms to tile with plywood sheets on the floor (instead of floorboards). What is your subfloor? What materials did you use?

    Large rectified tiles

Hi guys, I am thinking of installing large, porcelain, marble imitation, gloss floor tiles. I have three samples, 600x600, 1000x1000 and a large tile at 1200x1200. The large tiles are very heavy. I am also looking into other materials. I want all the downstairs to be the same tile, with no...

    Floor tiling adhesive thickness

Hi guys, How much adhesive would it be recommended for floor tiles? I am planning to have large tiles, from 600x600 to 1200x1200 (not decided yet). Reason I ask is two-fold. First, I am looking at a small kitchen floor with 8-9mm floor tiles and about 2-3mm adhesive, for a total of 11-12mm...

Fixing internal door linings on aerated block walls

I am not sure how to fix door linings onto the blockwork. It is aerated blocks and you cannot really use large screws, the blocks crack. I can get away with 6mm wall plugs drilled right in the centre and a small 5mm x 60-80mm timber screw, but just as a temporary fixing, I would not have a door...
