    Leaking waste :-(

I've discovered (by chance fortunately) that the waste from our en-suite sink is leaking from the elbow joint that connects it to the stack that it connects into. Not sure if this has been leaking for a while as there have been unusual dripping noises for a while why the sink has been...

No plug chain blank with basin waste - where to buy?

I replaced a basin waste at the weekend (with a spinning one), and the new one didn't come with a blanking nut for where the old chain was removed, which has left a hole. Does anyone know what the correct term for this is, and where to buy them from? I say them, as I have another one to fit...

    Bathroom tap replacement

Well the new taps went in over the weekend, so thanks for the help/advice :) Surprisingly some of the bits I thought would be difficult (removal of old taps) was a lot easier than I expected, whilst other bits were harder. The tap threads were a few mm longer, but I just about managed to get...

    Bathroom tap replacement

Just the basin, for now at least, though my worry is once I've replaced these, the cistern lever and the waste, my wife will want the bath to match!

    Bathroom tap replacement

For less than £2 it's not a bad insurance policy!

    Bathroom tap replacement

The thing that put me off with isolation valves and hoses and led to my post here was the sheer number of options (that I admittedly didn't understand). e.g. Wras approved, full bore etc etc. - and the fact it was looking to potentially add £15-20 per pair of taps, Are you suggesting using...

    Bathroom tap replacement

It's mains fed (recently switched to combi boiler - though the old cylinder system used a thermal store, which I believe did away for the need for a loft tank) so it looks like I'll be filling up pans and the kettle, then using the stop cock under the sink to essentially isolate the whole house.

    Bathroom tap replacement

Thanks for the advice, it makes sense. I've ordered the parts (taps + replacement fibre washers, + basin wrenches etc) and am ready to go this weekend. Should I be using PTFE tape on the tap thread, or just letting the fibre washer do its thing? Also, is wetting the fibre washer in warm water...

Is it ok to box in boiler flue/pipes like this?

We had a new boiler fitted in the kitchen a few years ago, and were left with a bit of an eye sore where the pipes were redone (and minor issue with sound escaping from the kitchen into my daughters bedroom above). I'm planning on boxing in with mdf/plywood and then painting - maybe with an...

    Removing stuck cistern lever

Wow - I feel a little daft - it unscrewed relatively easily with grips. I've managed to remove the screw, but the brass bracket underneath seems to be on the lever rod quite tightly - I managed to shift it a bit using the grips with one part against the end of the rod - but stopped (as I...

    Removing stuck cistern lever

I want to replace our cistern lever, but when I tried to remove the existing one the screw seems to be stuck fast. I've tried copious amounts of WD40, which hasn't made any difference, and I have a big fat crosshead screwdriver, which initially was a good fit, but still ended up slipping. Any...

    Bathroom tap replacement

We have 2 x 20 year old bathroom hot taps that are both leaking, and need replacing. I think a tap reviver kit is out because the existing spouts are really tarnished so wouldn't match (and wife now likes the idea of chrome). The taps (full turn pillar) are currently connected direct to...

    Replacing Hotpoint HT303i door seal

We have a Hotpoint HT303i refrigerator, and the door has started not sealing properly when shut. Not always, but often enough for it to be a nuisance. I've cleaned the seal, and discovered a 30 cm split at the bottom. I've found a replacement seal direct from Hotpoint here...

Thoughts on how to tighten kitchen tap

Our kitchen tap has been getting loose (when moving the spout) over the last few weeks. This morning I tried to tighten it with a box spanner (as I have done a couple of times before) but realised that since the last time we did it, a boiler condensate pipe has been fitted, and is now blocking...

Bathroom tap not always shutting tightly

Thanks for that. Whilst I think tap revivers might be easier, unfortunately the spouts are quite tarnished meaning new shiny tops would really stand out! Any hints for if things (e.g. the screw) are stuck fast. I'm not saying it is, but just anticipating it given it's age.

Bathroom tap not always shutting tightly

I don't have silicone grease. Is it worth a trip out to get some? And where is it going (under and on top of the new washer?)? Also what's involved in servicing the whole valve?

Bathroom tap not always shutting tightly

We have an old-style bathroom tap (compression I think - the type with a spindle and washers), that doesn't always shut tightly, which is causing a drip/leak. It's difficult to put into words, but when turning it off, there is still some movement after the water 'appears' to have stopped. I...

    Plan to box in pipes

Thanks for the replies. Mocking up with cardboard is a great idea. I'll do that! The boiler engineer confirmed it was ok to box up the pipes, but recommended leaving access to part of the flue they plug their gizmo into, used to take readings/diagnose it (that's the sensor I was talking about).

    Plan to box in pipes

I want to box in the pipes that come out of the top of our boiler, and go into the ceiling (in the corner of the room). I realise for most this is a straightforward project, but being pretty inexperienced in woodwork I'd ideally like to do this 'properly' - and hopefully learn something along...

Replacing Euro cylinder locks - maximum sticking out externally

There have been some break-ins in the area recently, and apparently thieves are snapping the Euro cylinder locks on the patio doors to get in. We've not got much of value to take, but I'd rather have something to act as a deterrent, so figured I'd change my 20 year old Euro cylinder locks with...
