Want to install new fence - do I need planning permission?

Hello, This might sound dumb, but I'm new to the world of BR and permissions. I want to install a new fence & gate, 6 feet high, across the back of my driveway. The rules say a fence doesn't need planning permission if; My fence is taller than one metre. What constitutes "next to"? My...

Windows replaced - should council have been notified?

Thanks for the reply. I believe I've found a similar search. I can see applications related to the property approved in the past, however there is no mention of any window work. Also, the same search listed "constraints" and there was no mention of conservation (and we're certainly not a listed...

Windows replaced - should council have been notified?

Hello, We had our windows and front door replaced last year. The installer gave us an Assure Certificate at the end, which says the work is compliant with building regulations. We never informed the council of the intent to do this work (first time homeowner naivety, I had no idea that was...

Palette wood cladding on block wall - concerned about weight

Hello, I might be unnecessarily worrying about this, but no experience with how much hanging weight walls can hold. No harm asking. We want to install reclaimed palette wood across two walls to make them a feature. The room is on the first floor. The boards would be nailed to vertical battens...

    Utterly confused by CLS sizes

Thanks for information @JobAndKnock. Am I right in thinking this might be just the ticket for what I'm looking for? I don't see anything here about differing finished sizes. https://www.walls-and-ceilings.co.uk/arrow-cls-timber-batten-2400mm-x-75mm-x-50mm-timcls5075.html

    Utterly confused by CLS sizes

Hello, I need to batten out a wall and create a 50mm depth to be filled with 50mm thick sheep wool insulation. What timber should I use for this? If I search for 50mm CLS I get results which say 50mm x 75mm (38mm x 63mm). 38mm isn't 50mm. Super confused.

Leaky join - anything I can do to stop water seeping out?

Yeah, it's the underside of this one here. I guess 'weeping' is the way to describe it. Whereas everything else on the T piece seems to be sealed and encased in layers and layers of paint, you can just about see a clear line / gap has appeared around here. I haven't tried moving the nut at all...

Leaky join - anything I can do to stop water seeping out?

Hello, Took a radiator off the wall to properly decorate behind it. After putting it back on, this join in the pipe is sightly leaking. I guess from all the movement in the pipework taking the radiator off and on. Are there any simple things I can do to seal the joins? Thanks!

Do new sockets on an existing circuit require the electrician to supply a certificate?

Hello, I've just had some new sockets installed onto an existing circuit by an electrical company. When asked if I'll receive a certificate for the work, the response was: "No cert for this one as doesn't fall under scope of works to be certified" Is this true?

Cladding - What offers the best fake wood colour?

Looking to clad our dormers. Every trade person I talk to only wants to use Hardie Plank, but the fact of the matter is any natural wood colour Hardie Plank does just looks utter rubbish to me. What I want is something that looks like cedar (but I don't want to use real wood because I ain't...

    Dormer tile - fallen off

Hello, Got woken up last night by a crash. Discovered this morning, a tile had fallen from the side of the dormer. No idea how or why. You can see the nails came out with it and everything. Any suggestions about how to repair / fill the gap without having to remove the fascia?

Cover boxing as fake wood beam

Hey folks, Does anyone have any advice / tips about how I might cover some boxing to make it look like a wooden beam? In my head, I'm imagining some sort of facade / thin wood attached to each side to give it a fake wooden beam look. I've no idea what the boxing is covering (assume it's an...

Drilling 5mm pilot hole x150mm deep through oak sleepers - drill bit recommendations please!

What an absolute dream. Just to say this is working out great. I'm using 25mm oak dowels to plug things after fixing, and bashing those in and sawing them level with the top of the sleepers is strangely super satisfying. Thank you for your help!

Oak sleepers - is a membrane still required if backfilled with Mot Type 1 Subbase?

Hello, Thinking of changing my plans a bit. I understand that you want to avoid soil contact with sleepers because soil will hold moisture (hence using some sort of barrier / membrane), however, if the backfill is instead Mot Type 1 Subbase is a protective membrane necessary? Thanks!
