Sticking new stainless steel splash back to old glass splash back- with what?

Briefly: the original glass splash back (behind the hob) was fitted flush with the new tiling. It lasted 3 months before cracking...:( A new one was fitted on top of the existing cracked SB as we were told it would be very hard to get the cracked SB out of its recess. The end result was fine...

What do you call those metal compression bands with the screw tightener?

We used to use them to connect two lengths of hosepipe via a bit of metal tubing shoved into each end! You'd get two of the bands to clamp each end. You slipped them on then turned a screw to reef them tight. Any idea what they're called so I can look them up? Thanks

How much bigger than the floor should new carpet be, size-wise?

Ah, I thought it had to lie one way across the room! Thanks

    Carpet laying- how much?

    Thanks all!

How much bigger than the floor should new carpet be, size-wise?

I have a room that measures, skirting board to skirting board, exactly 3000mm x 2750mm, plus I need to add 50mm to the longer dimension for the doorway inset. I have a local Carpet Barn which, like all, sells ready cut pieces of carpet. Q1: How much bigger than the floor dimensions given...

    Carpet laying- how much?

I am renovating a house to sell (deceased estate). I already have the right sized pieces of carpet for the 2 bedrooms that need re-carpeting. They're 2750mm x 3050mm, and 3100mm x 4000mm, both perfect rectangles plus doorway. The underlay seems sound and still springy, and the stretcher...

Taking old paint off lime plastered wall..

70 year old house. We stripped back the anaglypta (wallpaper steamer) and lining paper; underneath was the remnants of the original white paint, in patches. Some came off with the heat from the steamer and plastic scraper, some didn't. The bare wall beneath looks like solid, pale grey...

    Zinsser BIN novice- advice, please!

We're redecorating a heavy smoker's house, on a bit of a budget. I think every 16 year old who lights up their first fag should join us for a few weeks.... The ceiling is the issue (having stripped the walls back to bare lime-plaster!). With the walls, we used cheap B&Q white emulsion as a...

Repainting nicotine stained white gloss woodwork!

Thanks - another question- if I sugar soap/ lightly sand the existing gloss- do I then need to use a primer before the Johnstones Aqua? In which case, which one? Presumably also water based? Or can I just paint the Aqua straight onto the prepared wood? Ta

Repainting nicotine stained white gloss woodwork!

Ah, OK. I'd've (wrongly?!) assumed the oil would act as a block on any underlying stain! Thanks for the recommendation.

Repainting nicotine stained white gloss woodwork!

Thanks, I'll give that a go. Guess I'll use oil-based gloss.

Repainting nicotine stained white gloss woodwork!

We are stripping out and repainting a heavy smoker's bedroom. Walls stripped down to plaster, ceiling 'steamed' free of nicotine globules (yuck!)- carpet to be replaced; but what about the skirting boards and door-frame /door? They are yellowed and shiney. Can I just sugar-soap, sand enough...

70 yr old house; 'grey' plaster(?) walls- repaint?

I think it might be lime plaster; it isn't distemper (thankfully!). I steamed off half the paper today and it wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be! There is a need for a) some filler in places, and b) some old mould stain sealant, so I may get some Zinsser B-I-N sealant; but overall, the...

70 yr old house; 'grey' plaster(?) walls- repaint?

Thanks. I've had a tug' at the wallpaper (it's coming away big time in places!) but it has come away completely, leaving nary a mark on the grey 'plaster' beneath. It didn't leave a base layer at all!

70 yr old house; 'grey' plaster(?) walls- repaint?

I have the unenviable task of tarting up a 70 year old brick house for deceased estate resale. The owner was evidently a heavy smoker and the bedroom wallpaper is pub-yellow! And peeling in places. The said wallpaper (applied 25 years ago, I'm told) appears to be stuck straight onto what...

Megaflo- how to reinstate air bubble...

The pressure has improved to what it was prior to this latest attempt- but I'm sure originally you could have cut concrete with it!

Megaflo- how to reinstate air bubble...

OK, had another go at it (leaving that black tap alone!). I see the red line on the meter (see original photo) is set at '1' but the black line, the needle, is on 1.75 ish. Presume that's OK?? Anyway, we did everything according to the instructions, I opened the TPR valve and got about 5...

Megaflo- how to reinstate air bubble...

We have a Megaflow which has lost pressure. The overflow pipe outside isn't dripping, though. We have followed the instructions but the lowest hot water tap never stops running! Yes, the mains is well and truly shut off, and yes, the system is 'off'. You can see from the photo that this is...
