    Old Heating Controller

Hi, I was hoping someone might be able to identify the controller in the photo and advise the best way forward : We have bought a ground floor maisonette circa 1970 and there are 4 rooms with these controllers in - estate agents said they control underfloor heating. There's no gas...

    Bubbles in emulsion

^bump^ Sandrine - thanks for your reply. Can anyone else recommend any other solutions to my problem e.g. eggshell as above or which of the many Zinsser products might do the trick? Thanks in advance!

Hi, thought I'd report back - it's now approx. 3 months since the leak and flooring is much better, might even replace the threshold shortly! Thanks for advice!

    Bubbles in emulsion

Hi, Really frustrated at the moment with bedroom painting - bubbles approx. 1-3mm in diameter appearing every time paint is applied. Hopefully the following will explain : I believe the wall to be fine as there were no bubble issues when first "finished" The paint is a Craig & Brown 1829...

    Flooring lifting post-leak

Ok...... getting the hint that screws aren't the way to go! What about the slight squeaking/creaking? Is this just a case of giving it more time to settle to variations in temperature? Thanks

    Flooring lifting post-leak

Hi, thanks for the reply. Will this still help even though it's now a week or so after the event? Is screwing an option for this one end at the doorway? (can be covered by threshold) Also, would some oil slowly permeate through the gaps and help the squeaking? Thanks again

    Flooring lifting post-leak

Hi, We had some engineered wood flooring laid a couple of months ago in the hall which was squeaking a little but settling down ok. Then...........last week had a radiator leak overnight which I only noticed because said flooring was squelching when walked upon! Leak is now fixed however...

    Slipping purlin

 Yes, I know it's duplicated however when I was researching the topic the first "purlin" matches came up in Roofing & Guttering before then finding some in Building. And you never know who knows........! @Andy - can you pick up the metal plates off the shelf somewhere as I don't need...

    Slipping purlin

Ok, have just measured - before the strut gets in the way on the rear I have about 19cm of the upper part of that purlin to bolt through, and obviously more for the lower part and as much as required on the front. Are these drilled plates something I could get from Jewson/Travis Perkins or do...

    Lighting

Hi, thanks for replies. By "the lighting circuit for upstairs starts here" I believe the upstairs circuit begins here fed from the mains unit in the garage (this bedroom is above the garage) - when this cable is left out no upstairs lights work! @holmslaw - yes there are earths, including...

    Lighting

Hi, I need to install a metal light fitting in an upstairs bedroom which wouldn't be a problem as I have changed several so far and fitted the junction boxes, etc. as no scope for ceiling roses. However this fitting involves more wires than before and I wanted to check the best way to do...

    Slipping purlin

Thanks for your replies. I haven't noticed anything significant in terms of roof spread - this would be the top few bricks of the house being pushed outwards or other cracking?? Or are there other signs to look for? For the repair - steel plate or timbers? Is either better than the other...

    Slipping purlin

Thanks for reply, but I don't think the strut is a problem - I thought the fix was most likely to strengthen/brace the purlin join with a steel plate bolted through and was looking for thoughts/advice on this? Any suggestions appreciated. :)

    Slipping purlin

Hi, I've noticed a purlin slipping its position in the loft and was looking for advice on the best way to repair. I first noticed a gap probably up to 5mm 6 months ago or so, but now reckon the gap is probably just over 1cm which is rather worrying! Is it something straightforward to do...

    Metal sockets and additional earths

Hi, From previous research I know that additional earth wires are advised when metal light switches and sockets are involved and that this is done by adding an extra earth wire from the metal switch/socket plate to the back box in the wall where there is (usually) a screw provided. Is this...

    Painting after steam stripping wallpaper

Hi, Currently stripping off wallpaper in our 70s house which is coming off ok but in places the old paint is peeling and can be ripped off in big chunks revealing the plaster. What's the best way to get a good paint finish when done stripping, i.e. primer everywhere/thin layer of filler in...

    Warm air heating

Hi, thanks for the reply. No, the system is not in use. Ducting is all over the loft floor and I imagine was once fed from near where fireplace is (opening appears on ground floor in a cupboard which backs onto fireplace) Have researched things like asbestos tape and concerned about what...
