    old flooring

Help! The tiler about to start my floor tiling has tried to remove some very old lino but can't get rid of the old adhesive. He has even tried a blow torch but even that didn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

    Patio cleaning

My patio slabs have gone the usual pale green colour with what looks like white splash marks (I assume this is another fungus). Can anyone recommend the best way to clean them without resorting to using a power spray?

    portable chemical toilets

Does anyone know if there is a new EU ruling which states that those kind gentleman who repair our highways and byways need to have the use of a portable toilet sited nearby? One appeared in my road yesterday, on a council maintained grass verge opposite my driveway (nice) for workmen in the...

    Dado rail

I am in the middle of having my hallway redecorated and thinking of having a dado rail fitted. The problem I have is what height should it be? The decorator says below windowsill height but I don't think that will look right as there will be a gap of about 3-4 inches between windowsill and...

The Stern Report (aka Global Warming)

Once again the doom-mongers are in the news. Sir Nicholas Stern was commissioned by the government to produce a report stating the effects on the world of global warming if we all sit back on our (obese) bottoms and do nothing. The results are due to be published shortly, but in a nutshell it...

    Evacuation programme

I just wish that the namby pamby misguided health and safety police and those who wrecked our childrens' sports days, are watching the two week programme on the bbc about evacuation conditions during ww2. Obviously not all children ended up in a place as idyllic as the setting for the TV prog...

    RIP Steve Irwin

Heard on the news this morning that Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter)has been killed in a marine accident. Not killed by a massive croc, but stabbed in the chest by a stingray barb. What a terrible way to die. That man had so much enthusiasm for everything he did and had such an amazing...

    bonfires

A 1000 curses on people who light bonfires on lovely sunny days before normal people have got chance to get home from work and get their washing in. Why can't they just take their rubbish to the local coucil tip like others do? Is it some sort of primal caveman urge that says to them "ug...

    limescale ring on enamel bath

A friend of mine has just moved into a house with an old fashioned pink enamel bath which has an unsightly white limescale ring around it to the depth of a normal bath. She has tried cleaning it with an enamel friendly cream cleaner and diluted vinegar and whilst it looks good when still wet...

    Water shortage

Anyone think that this latest "drought" (in spite of above average rainfall for May) is just a ploy by the water companies to get us all on water meters? Also it said on BBC news this morning that one way of getting us to cut down on our usage of the precious stuff would be to increase the...

    Garage wall eyesore

Help! Our neighbour's garage wall forms part of the boundary in our back garden. It is getting a bit tatty in places so we want to paint it using the same colour as it was originally. Do we need to ask his permission to do this even though it would be doing him a favour?

    smelly toilet

The toilet in my ensuite (which is adjacent to the main bathroom and uses the same soil pipe and is ok) flushes ok but has an almighty stink. Sometimes a while after flushing a dark "residue" appears in the bottom of the pan. Have tried the quick flush method with many buckets of water - hot and...
