110v transformers

Okay... a lot of technical talk going on here which is a little too far over my head! :shock: I'm handy with a soldering iron and I can identify components if I open up my 3kVA transformer (1.5kVA continuous). Is there any simple method I could use to get around this if an SSR is not an option? I like the resistor/relay idea or thermistor. But could someone perhaps point me in the direction of what component values would have to be? Cheers! :)
