Is it ok to use 3 core and earth for 2 and earth purposes? I can cut the earth wire back?

Thanks.

dose that mean connecting it with a chock bloc to the earth and or to the earth terminal at both ends

Thinking about using it for a light which had a very old cable. The cable size is the same.

Can I cut the unsheethed earth back and use the yellow interconnect as earth?

Thanks.

Thanks for the answers.

When I looked in the round junction box it seemed to have in 1 cable from the fuse box Red, Black and Earth (Bare copper) and then there was one set of cables going out to each light upstairs.

If I was to add a new light I just take the Red, Black and Earth to the new light?

You need to sleeve the earths. You shouldnt have bare copper. This is probably the same at all your sockets, switches, and ceiling roses.

Yep its sleeved i was just making sure people knew it was bare copper underneath sorry for the confusion.

I dont think I have celing roses just the cables I need for the actual light, Is this right?

Depending on the lights, the ceiling roses are what the pendants have from. Newer, and fancy lights dont often have them, just choc blocks fitted inside.

Feeeww you had me worried then.

So in my junction box I have the incoming mains but it is getting a little crowded in there now can I run the mains to another box and then feed the new light from it?

Are you looking to switch it too? Do you know if your junction box is only on when the light switch is flicked, or always on?

The junction box is always on and it feeds another box which kind of deals with the whole upstairs lighting apart from 1 new room.

Can a switch be put in before the wire gets to the light? Is there 2 ways of switching?

Thanks.

Yeah a switch can be put in. Reading back though it looks like your trying to install old colours cable too, your best bet is to use new harmonised twin and earth. If your gonna do a job, do it right first time. Saves future repair bills.
