Thanks to you all - fabulous suggestions for which boilers to try and I'm definitely thinking combi if possible as it would be good to get the extra cupboard space in the bedroom (where the tank currently is). I now feel in a position to have a conversation with my plumber about whether the gas pipe is appropriate (or whatever that point was further up the strand), and to fill my buckets!!

In a small terraced house the combi is the only real choice. Cylinders is a real daft idea. If mainly showers and the odd bath then the Broag 30C is great and well priced. If the cold mains are poor get them uprated. Have a dedicated 22mm pipe from the stoptap to the combi cold inlet.
Showing your ignorance again Dr Drivel. Broag don't make a 30C, only a 28C, 35C, 39C. For someone who maintains that they know all about Broags a very stupid mistake
And there was me thinking you could at least google web sites properly to get your usually wrong answers
