We should also destroy all Roman statues, remains, historic buildings - obliterate them. Most prolific slave traders in history. I'm affronted that we put up monuments to Romans who may have enslaved my very ancient ancestors.

:ROFLMAO:
do you mind, this is about black people.
get your own uprising.

in case you hadnt noticed, slavery is not really popular these days

Also i was replying to above post which mentions slavery.

should we bulldoze the lot,and if not why not?
appeal to extremes -a form of logical fallacy.

please point out where I suggested we should bulldoze the lot?

Slavery today is worse than at anytime in history, what are you doing about that?
we could start by not keeping a statue of a slave trade with a plaque that says

“Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city.”

Slavery is vile but you can't erase historic relics because of it
I never suggested that they should be erased.

This is about a specific statue, it has been toppled as part of a protest, whilst vandalism is bad -it gets publicity and brings the history of slavery to our attention.

If the result is that the statue is put in a museum and and both sides of Colstons story is told -maybe we would all be better educated.

If you think that, you're struggling to understand the comments.
Sorry Bodd.
I get a bit peeved when people make silly comments that in no way advances the discussion.
In my opinion, your comment was just such a comment
And what did I do, responded with a .....silly comment that in no way advanced the discussion.

My apologies also to durhamplumber and festive for my responses to them earlier today, they were silly comments and in no way advanced the discussion.

But let me be clear. I am not apologising because my comments were not accurate, they were, in my opinion, spot on.

The issue is about racism, about police brutality because of racism. It is not about slavery!
If you wish to start a discussion about abolishing slavery, I'm sure it's possible.
police brutality is caused by the ACAB attitude and lawlessness brought about by unemployment through poor education . mostly the result of alcohol and substance abuse and gang mentality.

Slavery today is worse than at anytime in history, what are you doing about that?, Mauritania in Africa is the worst, and last country to ban slavery.
Slavery is vile but you can't erase historic relics because of it, Pyramids/Churches/Mosques/Temples etc were built and sustained using slavery, should we bulldoze the lot,and if not why not?

You mentioned slavery on this thread:confused:
I have indeed mentioned slavery, several times, in discussion about whether slavery was born out of racism, or vice versa.

But in case you hadn't noticed the protests and the discussions are about racism, police brutality, structural inequality, etc.
No where, and no-one involved in the protests has suggested that it ought to be about abolishing slavery.
Only you want to divert the discussion into another issue.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure everyone thinks that slavery is wrong, but the issue now is about racism, police brutality, and structural inequality.

f@ck what a condescending tedious f&cking individual. imagine having to live with something like that

“Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city.”

Very appropriate. Bristol would be decades behind without the slave traders and the current shower of violent blacks and blm marchers would probably not even be in the equation.

Isn't islamic slave trading still wide spread today?
Where are the muslim/islam apologists?
Come out from under your rocks you sad gits.
Try addressing that instead of pobtificating about a statue which relates to something that happened hundreds of years ago.

I don't like Priti Patel much - fake conservative, supercilious, disappointing after her promised crackdown on crime BUT having said that I consider her a good immigrant. She has worked hard to be where she is rather than play the victim and blame Britain for everything. She has contributed to the country rather than taken, and promotes the country rather than denigrates it, and all in the face of the undeniable racial name-calling that she must have experienced but has shrugged off. There are many immigrants like this - you don't hear the Chinese or the Jews whinging - though they face much abuse too - they just work hard, live decent lives and fit in.
