I have recently noticed the following in a lighting circuit..

from a spur, a wire goes via a light switch to 2 light fittings.
Everything looks OK except for the live connection.

On each light fitting;
- On the neutral (including the light fittings) all meet on the neutral terminals marked N

- The live connections meet on the Loop in ..including the light fitting.

Am I correct in thinking the live connections should meet through the switched live.. terminals am i correct in thinking thats not acceptable or should I just leave it?

Switch should be in the live. I guess this is for safety reasons, so that the lampholder is not live when the switch is turned off.

On the other hand, it will not make a blind bit of difference to your average bulb which way round it is. Just make a habit of never sticking your finger into the bulbholder.

If only two terminals are in use, I assume the live is empty??

No problems using the center loop as the sw-live, although it may be difficult to use the strain releif wings.

Damol - having a live in the lamp holder while the switch is off is a dangerous affair, I am supprised you recommended that.

I did not recomend it. I said, 'swich should be in the live'

I was hoping that people might also note the reason for doing it that way.

But as to dangerous, well sticking a knife through your body is dangerous. Most people understand that it is much better to stick it through the vegetables you are chopping rather than through your fingers. Similarly I was hoping to impress that sticking any part of your anatomy into something which could be live, is not a terribly good idea.

I think it wise to always assume that some part of a light fitting might be live unless you are quite certain all power is off on the circuit. So if you assume it may be live anyway, having the wires the wrong way round makes little difference.

Lectrician -

The Switch Live terminal is empty, with the Live as the switch live.
Neutrals are as normal.

BTW, I checked the light switch to make sure that it is the live that passes through it and not the Neutral. Also tested it incase someone had wired the live throught the blue and neutral through the brown on the spur, and followed it to the last light on the spur.. just incase.

Thanks for your advice... thought I'd just ask to make sure.

Your install sounds OK. It would be better for the live to be in the SW Live terminal, rather than the loop, but this is not electrically dangerous.

Is the flex drop suiatably anchored by the ceiling roses 'wings' ??
