advice on quotes I have received

I had no idea that VAT was charged by some and not others.

On my expected £3.5k for a central heating installation I could save £600 by just finding someone who isn't VAT registered.

The inconsistancy of the tax system never ceases to amaze me.

The Vat in 3.5K is £520 but even if non Vat registered it would only be the saving in the labour element, which is still a saving though.

Correct, the VAT element in a total of £3500 would be £ 521.28 but that would include VAT on the materials would would still have to be paid by the non VAT registered business anyway.
If a non VAT reg installer paid say half the total for materials then you`d just get away with the other half of the VAT so about £260 then.
Like was said - still a saving.
