Now US lobbyists call for protected status to be dropped for products like Scotch whiskey, Cumberland sausage, Cornish pasties and Melton Mowbray pork pie.

So that they can import their products.

America First is all very well, but are we getting anything in return or would we just be bending over so Uncle Sam can stick it up us?

To be fair, we have plenty of places selling American Pizza or New Yorker burgers that aren't made in America. It also means Sherry and Champagne could also be used to describe a style not an origin.

The EU has the interests of 28 countries at heart, so it is very strong on protecting names like Parmesan, Scotch, Champagne, Melton Mowbray, Stilton, Burgundy etc.

The US sees RoW as a bunch of pesky foreigners, and doesn't care. They think that any wine with bubbles is "champagne" and any cheese with holes is "swiss". They think that "scotch fillet" is a cut of beef.
