You can see if someone is online. There'll be a green flag in the corner of their avatar.

Although it can be disabled.

It must be reasonably useful and popular otherwise it wouldn't be built into the worlds best selling forum software

There's usually loads of functionality built into software. You can use the bits that you want, and leave the rest.
