We had a full service on our Alpha combi boiler last October, by a Gas Safe registered company.

Subsequently had a few problems, the most serious of which was a load of blackish/brown gunk dripping out the bottom of the boiler onto kitchen work surface. Company came back and said they found no problems, but "tightened up everything" in their words.

Saturday morning, because of continuing issues, (hot water only works when heating is on, for example) we decided to bite the bullet and get a new Combi costed out. Called in another (different) company, also Gas Safe regd.

He discovered the cap of the Combustion Testpoint had NOT been replaced and was just sitting on top of the boiler, where presumably it had been for the last 3 months. With Carbon Monoxide escaping into the kitchen every time the boiler has operated. Clearly a mega-

serious issue, and one we'll be taking up with the original company and Gas Safe first thing on Monday.

My question is, to anyone who knows their boilers, could the failure to replace this cap also have created the black gunk issue? And the boiler only producing hot water when the heating is on. (Not to mention the health issues...)

Any thoughts gratefully received...

No, failing to replace that cap will not affect the functionality of the boiler or cause sludge to leak out. Black sludge in your system has most likely caused the hot water issue
