Alternative to A142 mesh?

Hi,

We've been given plans for a new porch 1.8 x 2m which specify a floor with a 100mm concrete slab with A142 mesh on an insulated foam base.

Local suppliers can only supply A142 mesh in 3.6 x 2m or bigger which would leave me with a whole lot that I don't need and would have problems disposing of. Is there an alternative (thicker slab or alternative material to the mesh).

Loose bars 6mm at 200mm centres each way.. but you may find that more expensive than the mesh. Not sure how you would have problems disposing of the steel.. either resell the extra or double up the mesh in the footing

Sell it on eBay?

Look on eBay for a smaller piece, or a supplier who will cut to size?

Use the leftovers to build a compost heap?

Given that you/your builder will have to have the ability to cut the mesh, cut it into pieces small enough to transport to the dump in the boot of your car?

probably cheaper to buy the mesh and a cheapy angle grinder than buying lengths of rebar...that will still need cutting!

Might be a dumb question, but why do you need mesh in a small porch slab?

What nonsense the plans specify - there's no need for mesh or rebar in such a small, domestic area.

Add fibres to the mix, FWIW, and leave it at that.

Historical slabs were poured for ever without mesh - though i admit commercial or heavy use areas benefit from mesh or re-bar.

Leave the mesh out. It's not necessary.

I don't know why the plans specify mesh although I suspect that the architect may have taken some existing plans (for a much larger building) and "tweeked" them or just cut and pasted "appropriate" text.

Porsche? Nah that's next door neighbour.... seriously tho we were getting drawings done for planning permission & building warrants and he "threw in the porch drawings for free"
