We are adding a small alcove to an existing ground floor room. The three exterior walls will have casement and fixed windows over a low (27") wall. Our original plan was to build the lower part of the wall with concrete block and face it with stone. Many companies make very attractive decorative blocks for retaining walls--apparently designed to build without using mortar. Can any of these stones be adapted to our use--perhaps by adding mortar? Any suggestions?

it will depend on the crushing strength of the blocks, their weathering suitability and also their thermal characteristics.
