Another joist question!!

So I am in the process of hanging my joists in my extension but I have an issue. I have bolted timber in to the web of the steel to fix my hangers to but the timber is not flush with the steels so I am having to notch out the corner of each joist.

should I have gone for thicker timber to make it flush ? Should I add another timber plate or just carry on notching each joist ?
 
assuing at the top lay them in say groups off 6 or 8
circular saw set 2mm more than needed cut across the joists then chisel will break along the grain
